English Barndance

Some favourite English barn dances

A note of caution on assigning a dance or a tune to a country . Strip the Willow is danced throughout the British Isles and I doubt anyone cares who invented it – like the Gay Gordons , it’s one of those dances that everyone requests and everyone enjoys doing . Similarly we all seem to hornpipe, jig ,waltz, polka and reel . I guess if a dance has “Nottingham” or “Yarmouth”in the title it’s probably English – beyond that, it’s over to you .Other popular dances include:

Circle Hornpipe
Blaydon Races
Cumberland Reel
Four Around Four
Lucky 7
Military Two-Step
Ninepins
Nottingham Swing
Oxo reel
Roger de Coverley
Rosa waltz
The Snowball
Yarmouth Long dance
